Phaedra is a character in Barbie & The Diamond Castle. She is a muse of music voiced by Heather Doerksen.

Story[]

Phaedra is a spirit of music, alongside Dori, Melody and Lydia, who used to be just like her before Lydia betrayed them all. They are known formally as the muses of music, and the original trio were Phaedra herself, Dori and the late Lydia, and they took care of their home, the Diamond Castle and were friends, creating and singing incredible songs, while teaching the young apprentice Melody the arts of music and how to be a real muse someday.

One day, Lydia revealed her true colors and her desire to be the only muse. Dori and Phaedra respectfully disagreed saying music was for everyone, but Lydia was furious and she did not understand. She stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her and she left, but not before she vowed to come back someday and get the Diamond Castle for herself. She fled and eventually met her sidekick, a serpent named Slyder. He immediately liked her so she made him work for her from then on. She also found an ancient cave filled with dark magic and she learned the dark arts. With her newfound powers, she came back to her former home, the Diamond Castle, to destroy it and spread her dark magic through the walls of her own birthplace.

But Dori and Phaedra had heard about Lydia's planned attack, and they were prepared. They cast a spell that submerged the Diamond Castle under the magically created lake, and that spell sealed it, making it completely invisible to Lydia. They left their magical instruments inside the castle in the hope of them also being safe from Lydia. Both muses trusted their apprentice, Melody, and gave her the key to restoring the Diamond Castle to its rightful place on the surface in case anything happened to them. Dori and Phaedra, the remaining muses, gave Lydia a last chance of forgiveness by trying to solve Lydia's own conflict with them. Despite this, she used her weapon of dark magic to turn both muses into stone statues. Their apprentice watched them from afar until Lydia realized her presence and ordered Slyder to kidnap her.

Melody ran away and used her magic to hide in a mirror belonging to an old peddler. Her flute was magical and it enabled her to hide inside a mirror if she played it and she knew she had to hide inside this mirror when she saw it because she needed to hide from Slyder because he was evil and he planned to kill her. So she played it and hid in the mirror, but if her flute was broken while she was inside the mirror, she would become trapped in it forever, and unfortunately, that was exactly what happened. Slyder came by and noticed that Melody had accidentally dropped her flute and he broke the flute, trapping Melody in the mirror forever. And since then, she had always been stuck in the mirror.

Lydia was furious that her former apprentice escaped. Despite this, she came back to her lair, in the ancient cave filled with dark magic and brought Dori and Phaedra, now stone statues, with her. Melody was trapped and she did not reveal herself to anybody. Some time later, the magic mirror fell in the hands of a peasant girl, named Liana and her friend Alexa. Melody then revealed herself for the first time since her imprisonment and told them about her birthplace, the Diamond Castle, and her former tutors, Dori and Phaedra. She also told Liana and her best-friend, Alexa about how dangerous Lydia could be and that destruction would spread all over the world if her dark magic could reach the muses' instruments. After a long time, Melody was finally happy to find new friends who shared her love for music.

After Lydia and her sidekick Slyder are defeated and turned into stone statues as a punishment for everything they did, all of Lydia's dark spells were broken and Dori and Phaedra came back to their old selves, finally free of their imprisonment as stone statues. They return to the Diamond Castle and they meet Liana, Alexa, Ian, Jeremy and the puppies. They share a warm reunion with Melody and they formally declare her a real muse. They also gives the twin brothers modern guitars, and they crown Liana and Alexa princesses of music, aside from giving them magical seeds that sprouted into flowers with diamonds. After the human beings and puppies were gone, the muses Dori, Phaedra and Melody keep looking after the Diamond Castle and they take care of the children, at the same time fulfilling their duties as spirits of music.

Powers[]

As a muse of music, it is reasonable and logical to deduce that Phaedra had the ability to cast powerful magic from the musical instrument she played (the guitar), though she never demonstrated it in the film. This theory is plausible, because Lydia (another muse of music) was able to cast magic through her flute, and Melody, the apprentice muse, was also able to cast magic through her flute.

As seen by the final confrontation between Liana, Alexa, Melody, and Lydia, when Phaedra's guitar is played in conjunction with Dori's lyre and a song of goodness, it is able to generate a powerful, expansive forcefield that could deflect all magical attacks from other musical instruments of darkness, and even break all the spells cast by those instruments.
