Mermaids are a type of creature first seen in the Barbie: Fairytopia series. They are creatures that inhabit Mermaidia. They are ruled over by Prince Nalu. There are also several other films featuring merpeople. Mermaids canonically exist in modern times too in the current Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures Universe. They are also featured in Barbie Dreamtopia.
Physical appearance[]
Mermaids and mermen are beautiful creatures with the heads and torsos of humans with the tails of fish. Mermaids range widely in color and they can have hair colors a human would not have, like Nori's blue hair. Their tails are bright and colored, with ornate and detailed patterns like flowers and spirals adorning scales. Mermaids can also be tattooed with the Courage Crest on their arms if they reach the Depths of Despair. In Mermaid Power, many mermaids with blue, green, purple, or other unnatural-colored skin are shown.

Powers[]
In the Universe of Barbie: Mermaid Power, each mermaid can use magic, but only somewhat well. When they discover what element is tied to them, it clicks and they gain full control of that one power they are destined to use.
In Mermaid Tale, the royal leader can create Merilia, a magical essence that keeps the ocean ecosystem alive.
In Dolphin Magic, Isla possesses a necklace that helps her transform into a human. She gave one to Barbie that can do the reverse.
Trivia[]
- Fairies can turn themselves into mermaids by going to the Depths of Despair. They can revert back to their regular selves by eating the True Self berry.
- Unlike fairies, who need a special type of kelp (or some fruits as seen in Barbie: Mariposa and Her Butterfly Fairy Friends) to breathe underwater and visit merfolk kingdoms, its native mermaids/men can breathe underwater naturally in their aquatic environment as they are half fish. This also applies to Merfairies as well. Those land-based fairies under the effects of the kelp cannot remain under the water forever, as it allows for only a short time.[1]
- In Barbie: Mermaid Power, mermaids can only walk on land and breathe air if they are a mermaid of air. Water mermaids can communicate with aquatic animals, like dolphins or fish. Earth mermaids can manipulate the environment, and fire mermaids can cause volcanic eruptions.
- All merfolk possess a little bit of all four elements and can use them to some degree. When a mermaid realizes her true element, she is gifted with a crown made of sea materials (such as corals or shells) as proof of her realization, while a merman is gifted with a pair of bracers.
- In Barbie: Mermaid Power, merfolk are vegans: they eat only seaweed, albeit with various varieties.
- In both Barbie in a Mermaid Tale and Barbie: Mermaid Power, a shell necklace has the power to turn humans into mermaids. In A Mermaid Tale, one must directly said "I wish to become a mermaid" for it to work while in the second movie, one simply needs to put on the necklace and touch it, and can turn anyone who touches the transforming person into mermaids as well.
