Official Description[]
"When Brooklyn and Malibu, members of Handler's Spring Dance planning committee, are struggling to boost ticket sales, a letter Malibu receives from Ken inspires a creative solution."[4]
Story[]
Malibu and Brooklyn have joined Handler Arts Academy's Spring Dance planning committee. The other members are named Paul and Emma. Paul says he has never seen ticket sales this low during his three years on the planning committee. He is stressed because the Spring Dance is happening that weekend, but Emma reassures him that they'll figure out a solution. Paul wants the dance to be perfect because he told Dean Morrison it would be, and the dance is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the drama club.
On the subway back to Brooklyn's house, Malibu video chats with Nikki, Teresa, Renee and Daisy about the Golden Beach High Spring Dance. Malibu and her friends used to go to the dance as a group and dance all night, but Teresa says they are boycotting it this year since everyone is going as couples. Daisy says they will be the only ones without dates. Nikki refuses to go without a date, and Renee feels embarrassed just thinking about going without a date. At the end of the call, Malibu tells Brooklyn she misses her friends back home.
When Malibu and Brooklyn get home, they see a note from Simone telling them to clean up, and Malibu has received a physical letter. Malibu says it's just an update, but Brooklyn thinks the letter is special since it's handwritten and mailed across the country. Brooklyn says it reads like a love letter and it seems like Ken can't stop thinking about Malibu.
Malibu says Ken's feelings for her may be more than friendship, but changes the subject to Brooklyn being a romantic. Brooklyn admits she loves romance and says it can be easier to express your feelings through writing, like with their songs. Malibu feels inspired and thinks maybe students aren't inviting each other to Handler's Spring Dance because they don't know how to express themselves. Malibu wants to write love letters for students to give to their crushes or their friends. Brooklyn thinks it's a great idea and they start promoting it immediately. Brooklyn uses her laptop to make a spreadsheet of who the letters are from, who they're for, and other details,
Brooklyn falls asleep so Malibu phones her friends back home. She mentions her letter from Ken and her friends get excited and ask for details. Malibu says Brooklyn thinks it's a love letter, and she doesn't know how to respond to the letter, or if she should respond at all. Renee comments on how Ken "finally" said something, Daisy squeals, Nikki thinks it's exciting, and Teresa says Malibu definitely has to respond. Malibu says she will respond after she figures things out. Renee tells Malibu not to take too long to respond because they've been waiting for this moment forever.
Malibu accidentally drops pens on Brooklyn's laptop keyboard. As she picks them up, the list of recipients in her spreadsheet gets reordered. Neither of the girls notice. They label the letters and bring them to school the next day. Emma loves the idea, but Paul isn't sure if it will work. Malibu says they had so many requests that they had to stay up all night writing letters, but Paul is still nervous. Emma says this could be a "fun, new experience" for Paul. He tells Emma he isn't used to doing "fun" or "new" things, and he wants the dance to be perfect.
After Malibu and Brooklyn hand out all the letters, Malibu's friends back home phone her for an update on her response to Ken. Malibu says it's only been a day and she needs to respond in her own time. She tells her friends she loves them and misses them, and they feel the same way about her. After the phone call, Teresa feels like love between friends isn't celebrated the same way romantic love is. Daisy thinks love between friends is more important than romance. The girls reconsider boycotting the dance. Renee sees Ken and wants to talk to him about Malibu, but the other girls stop her.
Malibu looks at the spreadsheet and realizes the names in the recipients' column got mixed up. She has no idea how it happened. Malibu and Brooklyn worry about the ensuing chaos and heartbreak and imagine Dean Morrison crying over getting the wrong letter. Malibu and Brooklyn resolve to fix the situation and manage to swap the letters to the right recipients. Emma is impressed and Paul thanks the girls. He tells them they've set a high bar for future members of the planning committee.
Malibu wants The Barbies' next song to be about the importance of sharing your honest feelings with people. At the dance, Paul announces that the tickets sold out and Emma says it's because of Malibu and Brooklyn's love letters. Malibu's friends video call her and say they're going to the dance as a group since Malibu reminded them that love comes in different forms. Malibu says she'll update them on Ken later, and she and Brooklyn wait outside for Rafa.
Emma says she was so focused on selling tickets that she forgot to buy one. Paul shows her two tickets. He tells Emma the real reason he was worried about the dance was because he was hoping she'd go with him. Emma accepts his invitation and they go inside together. Brooklyn asks Malibu what she will say to Ken. Malibu doesn't know what she'll say, but she wants to write a letter to Ken. Brooklyn offers to write it for her. Malibu thanks her, but says she'll write it herself. Malibu and Brooklyn see Rafa. They go inside to celebrate their love and friendship by dancing all night.
