Scene 1 (Arriving in New York)[]
[Barbie (Malibu) gets out of a car after arriving at a theater in New York. The marquee reads "BROADWAY MELODIES: BARBIE ROBERTS". She smiles as people cheer, take photos, and request autographs. Before Barbie can perform, it is revealed that she was only daydreaming. In reality, she is in the back of a cab. The cab driver honks the horn at a man singing an opera song.]
Cab driver: Move it, buddy! Let's go!
Man singing opera: [Singing]
Cab driver: Hey, why don't you save it for the stage, Pavarotti?! [Malibu laughs.] This guy over here... sorry 'bout that. This clown thinks he's gonna be big on Broadway.
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] Huh, that's one crazy dream. [She clears throat, and then gasps. She sticks her body out the car window.] New York, I love you already! Woohoo! [Phone rings] Yeah!
Cab driver: [Chuckles] Here we go again...
Barbie (Malibu): [Answers phone] Hey, guys!
[Barbie's family is video chatting with her.]
George: Hi, honey!
Margaret: Barbie, you're there!
Barbie (Malibu): Wh-- How did you know that I landed already? We got in early.
Skipper: You know Dad installed a tracker on your cell, right?
Barbie (Malibu): [Gasps] Dad...
George: Not that I was worried...
Margaret: [Scoffs] Your father was worried.
Barbie (Malibu): Well, I made it!
Chelsea: [Gasps] Are you gonna be a big star?!
[Barbie laughs and the cab driver honks his horn. He sticks his head out the window and yells inaudibly at other drivers.]
Barbie (Malibu): Well, let me get through the summer program first, then we'll see about being a star.
Stacie: Is it like being on another planet?
Barbie (Malibu): Apparently, people here really like pretzels... and I have never seen this many taxi cabs in one place. [Sticks body out of window] It's even more amazing than I imagined! [Gets back in car] And, yes, it's a little bit like being on another planet.
Margaret: Well, if you get homesick, we're only a video call away.
Barbie (Malibu): I know. Thanks, Mom. [Phone buzzes.] Ooh, I better go.
George: We can't wait to come visit!
Skipper: Don't forget us when you're famous!
Chelsea: Take lots of pictures!
Stacie: Bring me back a souvenir!
Barbie (Malibu): Bye! [Switches to video call with Teresa, Daisy and Nikki.]
Nikki: Hey, Barbie!
Barbie (Malibu): You guys must be psychic! I'm just about to take my first bite out of the Big Apple!
Teresa: Do you miss us yet?
Nikki: Malibu's just not the same without you.
Teresa: What have you seen so far? Have you been on Broadway?
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] You guys... Not yet! [Gasps] Here it is! The Handler Arts Academy!
Nikki: Whoa! Check it out!
Teresa: [Gasps] It's so beautiful!
Daisy: Wow...
Cab driver: Here we are...
Barbie (Malibu): [ Gets out of the cab with her suitcase.] I'm so lucky to spend the summer here.
Daisy: Luck's got nothing to do with it. You worked your tail off for this.
Barbie (Malibu): I know, but... I just hope I'm good enough. There's bound to be some pretty stiff competition here.
Daisy: Come on...
Teresa: Oh, please!
Nikki: You got this!
[The cab driver gives Barbie more of her luggage. A big cardboard box covers her face on the video chat.]
Daisy: Uh, where'd she go?
Nikki: Where'd you go?
Teresa: Hello?!
Barbie (Malibu): [Moves luggage.] Oh, I'm here! But maybe I should talk to you later.
Teresa: Okay, bye!
Nikki: We love you!
Daisy: Have fun!
[Malibu ends the video chat. She turns to the cab driver.]
Cab driver: [Smiles and waves] Break a leg, kid.
Barbie (Malibu): Thank you! [Sees steep floor leading to the academy.] Ooh! I just might... [Sighs.]
Scene 2 (Malibu Meets Brooklyn)[]
[Barbie struggles to walk up the slope. She almost bumps into two students.]
Student: Hey! Careful!
Barbie (Malibu): Oops! Sorry.
[Barbie gets stopped in her tracks by a pigeon. She drops her suitcase and it rolls down the steep floor.]
Barbie (Malibu): Woo! Oh, no! Watch out below!
[Barbie (Brooklyn), another student, is carrying her own cardboard box and has her own luggage. She sees Barbie's suitcase coming toward her.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Whoa! Runaway suitcase! [Use ballet moves to catch suitcase with her foot.] And once again, ballet saves the day.
Barbie (Malibu): Oh, my gosh! Thank you!
Barbie (Brooklyn): I should thank you. I can never get enough practice in.
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] Wow! I wish I had two extra hands so I could applaud.
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Laughs] Thanks!
[They try to go through a revolving door at the same time, but Barbie loses her balance. They both end up dropping their belongings and falling down. They begin picking up their things.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): [In jest] Hmm, I hope you're better on the guitar than you are with doors.
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] My taxi cab driver told me to break a leg. Apparently, I took him literally! [Laughs with Brooklyn.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): As long as you don't break mine, we're good! Also, maybe don't break yours, either.
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] I'll try my best! By the way, I'm--
Custodian: Early! A whole day, to be exact.
Barbie (Malibu): Wait, what?
Barbie (Brooklyn): You've got to be kidding me.
Custodian: Every year, one of you overly eager Broadway babies shows up a day early. Ugh...
Barbie (Brooklyn): Do we have to leave?
Barbie (Malibu): [Holding a toy] And come back tomorrow?
[Malibu's toy squeaks. She gasps and then laughs awkwardly, hiding it behind her. Brooklyn smiles at her.]
Custodian: Nah, you can head up to the dorms. 10th floor. Room assignments are alphabetical. [Walks away sweeps floor, then grunts.] I'm too old for these out-of-towners.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Hey, I'm from Brooklyn!
Barbie (Malibu): You're from Brooklyn? As in, New York?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Is there any other?
Barbie (Malibu): Wow! I've never met anybody from Brooklyn.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Really? Where are you from?
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] I'm from Malibu, California.
Barbie (Brooklyn): You're a long way from home.
Barbie (Malibu): I am, but, as they say, if I can make it here...
Barbie (Brooklyn): You can make it anywhere.
Barbie (Malibu): I know, right?!
Barbie (Brooklyn): Come on, let's go find our rooms.
Scene 3 (Two Barbies)[]
[Barbie and her roommate walk towards the dorm rooms.]
Barbie (Malibu): Maybe getting here early was a blessing in disguise.
Barbie (Brooklyn): How so?
Barbie (Malibu): Well, now we'll have a chance to explore New York before classes start!
Barbie (Brooklyn): I'd be happy to show you around.
Barbie (Malibu): Awesome.
[They stop in front of a door that says "Barbie Roberts".]
Barbie (Brooklyn): I should get unpacked.
Barbie (Malibu): Yeah, me too. It's great to meet you.
[They reach for the door handle at the same time, then stop.]
Barbie (Malibu): Um, I think this is my room.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Um, it has my name on it. I'm Barbie.
Barbie (Malibu): But...I'm Barbie. What's your last name?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Roberts.
Both Barbies: We have the same name?!
Barbie (Brooklyn): We're both named Barbie Roberts?
Barbie (Malibu): I've never even met anyone else named Barbie before.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Me, neither.
Barbie (Malibu): Let alone Barbie Roberts!
Barbie (Brooklyn): I know, right? Must be cosmic chaos.
Barbie (Malibu): Won't it be weird calling each other Barbie?
Barbie (Brooklyn): In Brooklyn, I'm the only Barbie I know of.
Barbie (Malibu): Me, too! In Malibu, I mean.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Why don't you just call me "Brooklyn"? That'll make things easier.
Barbie (Malibu): And you can call me "Malibu"!
Barbie (Brooklyn): Perfect. I love it.
Barbie (Malibu): Me, too.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Done!
[They fist bump and then go in the dorm room.]
Scene 4 (Hanging Out)[]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Home sweet home... at least, for the summer.
Barbie (Malibu): Not bad. [Gasps] Balcony!
[Malibu and Brooklyn smile at each other. They run to the balcony.]
Barbie (Malibu): Woohoo! This is awesome!
Barbie (Brooklyn): Nice, huh? I wish I had this view in Brooklyn.
Barbie (Malibu): Wow...
[They run back indoors.]
Barbie (Malibu): I've never done a program like this before. Have you?
Barbie (Brooklyn): I've spent every summer of my childhood in some classical training program or another.
Barbie (Malibu): Wow, that's dedication.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yeah, it was really intense. Where'd you train?
Barbie (Malibu): I trained at "the internet."
Barbie (Brooklyn): Wow, home-schooled. That's cool! [Laughs]
Barbie (Malibu): Yeah. I just love playing the guitar and singing.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Me, too... and dancing, and keyboard...
Barbie (Malibu): I'd love to hear you play.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Me, too... and why not? We're a whole day early. We're got plenty of time to hang out.
Barbie (Malibu): Right?
[A montage plays of Barbie from Malibu and Barbie from Brooklyn hanging out. They play their guitars; share pizza and then take photos with tomato sauce on their faces; share toothpaste when they brush their teeth; show each other their toys and make their toys kiss each other; wear headphones and listen to music next to each other; and show each other things on their phones while sitting on a bed. Malibu falls off the bed and they laugh.]
Barbie (Malibu): Here's to you!
Barbie (Brooklyn): No, here's to us!
[They fist bump and sing "Before Us" while dancing in their room, which is now decorated.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): I love the concrete jungle
Barbie (Malibu): And I'm a beach girl
Both Barbies: Together we're best of our possible worlds
Barbie (Malibu): A duo so dynamic
Barbie (Brooklyn): Like fire and rain
Both Barbies: Together we can set it off and make a big bang
Hey, universe, look who's coming at ya
For the first time, I've found my perfect match, yeah
[They begin switching locations, dancing in different rooms at the academy and also on the streets of New York.]
How did we ever survive
Before us? (Before us)
All I need now in my life
Is more us (Is more us)
It's like we're meant to be
Like destiny, so right
Yeah, how did we ever survive (Oh...)
Before us?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Oh...
Barbie (Malibu): Mm...
I just go with the flow
Barbie (Brooklyn): I plan out every day
Both: Our master plan'll lead us straight to Broadway
Barbie (Brooklyn): East Coast
Barbie (Malibu): West Coast
Both: Who would wanna choose?
Put 'em all together, put respect on this groove
Through thick and thin
We've got the brightest future
Where've you been?
'Cause I wish I met you sooner
How did we ever survive
Before us? (Before us)
All I need now in my life
Is more us (Is more us)
It's like we're meant to be
Like destiny, so right
Yeah, how did we ever (oh...)
Barbie (Brooklyn): Survive before us?
Barbie (Malibu): Oh, whoa, yeah
Barbie (Brooklyn): Hey, hey, oh whoa
Hey, yeah
Barbie (Malibu): Oh whoa oh
Both: It's like we're meant to be
Like destiny, so right
Yeah, how did we ever survive (oh...)
Before us?
[They finish singing and run towards a subway train.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Malibu, come on! Hurry!
[Malibu gets stuck in the doors.]
Barbie (Malibu): Uh... um... [laughs nervously.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Girl, what is it with you and doors? [Pulls Malibu out of door.]
Barbie (Malibu): Ugh, was that a totally clueless tourist move?
Barbie (Brooklyn): No, not at all!
Barbie (Malibu): Honestly?
Barbie (Brooklyn): No, not at all...
[They laugh. Malibu sees a poster.]
Barbie (Malibu): Look! Emmie! The Emmie! She's my favorite.
Barbie (Brooklyn): She is?
Barbie (Malibu): Do you know she has, like, 50 million followers?
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Visibly bothered] Mm, no.
Barbie (Malibu): She sold like a jillion albums!
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Rolls eyes] Yes...
Barbie (Malibu): She's just huge. I mean, I have a vlog, but she's on a whole other level. Don't you follow her?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Mm, not exactly. [Sighs] Okay, she used to be my friend.
Barbie (Malibu): [Jaw drops] What?! You knew Emmie? Like, personally?
[Brooklyn nods. Malibu squeals loud enough to garner stares.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Shh! Yes, we used to perform together when we were kids. We were really close, but... I haven't seen her in forever. Except on billboards.
Barbie (Malibu): That's tough... We should make a pact. When we get famous, we won't let it come between us.
Barbie (Brooklyn): How about we swap "famous" for "working on Broadway?"
Barbie (Malibu): Deal! [Yawns] But you never know; Broadway could make us famous. What a crazy place. [Yawns]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Looks like somebody's ready for bed.
Barbie (Malibu): Huh? [Shudders] No way! I'm too excited!
Barbie (Brooklyn): Well, this is the city that never sleeps. You fit in already. [Malibu yawns and falls asleep on Brooklyn's shoulder.] Spoke too soon...
Scene 5 (Speech and Meeting Rafa)[]
[In a practice room, dozens of students are singing, dancing and playing instruments.]
Student: [Using laptop] Oh, yes! I'm here! Finally! [Laughs
Percussionist: Coming through! [Bumps into people with his drum, then falls.]
[Malibu and Brooklyn go to a classroom. Brooklyn sees some empty seats.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Look, there's two down front.
[Emmie sits at the back of the class in disguise.]
Dean Morrison: Welcome, everyone! As most of you know, I am Dean Morrison.
[Students applaud, cheer and whistle.]
Student: Dean Morrison is my idol.
Dean Morrison: [Laughs] Thank you, thank you. It's great to be back for another summer of performing arts excellence. You've all worked very hard to get here, but that's nothing compared to the work ahead of you. Your instructors and I will be watching your progress all summer and, ultimately, deciding who will be featured in our prestigious Spotlight Solo. [Malibu and Brooklyn smile at each other.] And I'm pleased to announce that this summer's Spotlight Solo will be livestreamed... from Time Square!
[Students chatter excitedly.]
Student: Did you hear that?! Time Square!
Student: Time Square?
[Emmie smiles.]
Barbie (Malibu): [Gasps] Time Square? Can you imagine?
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Pauses] Yeah, I can imagine it.
Dean Morrison: There will only be one name on the Spotlight Solo marquee, and if you want that name to be yours, I suggest you listen, learn and practice, practice, practice. Now, let's get to work.
[Students cheer, whistle and applaud.]
Barbie (Malibu): Woohoo!
[Brooklyn laughs and applauds. They get up and leave together. On the way out, Brooklyn sees Emmie. Emmie hides her face behind her hand. In the hallway, students chatter. A dog named Gato barks.]
Barbie (Malibu): Is that a... dog? [Gato runs and barks.] Do you think he's lost?
[Gato runs into a room.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Only one way to find out.
[Malibu and Brooklyn walk up to the room and see it's the costume room.]
Barbie (Malibu): Costumes! My favorite!
Barbie (Brooklyn): After you.
[Malibu and Brooklyn enter the costume room.]
Barbie (Malibu): Wow, talk about dramatic.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I know, right?
[They see a boy named Rafa.]
Rafa: Drama is my middle name!
[Malibu and Brooklyn smile and Malibu gasps as Rafa comes towards them on a clothing rack with wheels.]
Rafa: I'm Rafa. The myth, the legend. Costume course. And you two?
Barbie (Malibu): We're in the performance course.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I'm Brooklyn. She's Malibu.
Both Barbies: [Laughs] And we're both Barbie.
Rafa: Fabulous! Two Barbies, one Malibu, and one Brooklyn. What are the odds?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Astronomical.
Barbie (Malibu): Cosmic chaos.
Rafa: I predict future Broadway stars.
[Malibu and Brooklyn laugh. Gato barks and runs towards them.]
Barbie (Malibu): Oh, there you are.
[Rafa bends down and Gato jumps into his arms. Gato licks Rafa's cheek.]
Rafa: That's Gato, my muse.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Gato? As in, Spanish for "cat"? You call your dog, "cat"?
Barbie (Malibu): And he's cool with that?
[Gato wags his tail.]
Rafa: The only "labels" we believe in are designer.
[Brooklyn pets Gato.]
Barbie (Malibu): He's adorable!
[Rafa hands Gato to Brooklyn and walks over to some clothes.]
Rafa: Speaking of designer labels...
Barbie (Malibu): What are those?
Rafa: [Holding two dresses] Broken dreams. My loss. Your gain.
[Rafa hands the dresses to Malibu and Brooklyn.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): "Broken dreams?" They're so pretty! Did you make them?
Rafa: More like I tried to make them. I was going for "avant garde" but I ended up with "avant garbage".
Barbie (Malibu): Are you crazy? They're amazing.
Rafa: "Amazing" is for amateurs. I want my designs to take your breath away and get chosen for the Spotlight Solo! But look...
[Rafa repeatedly presses a button on a remote control, but nothing happens.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Um... nothing's happening.
Rafa: Exactly! They're supposed to light up and sparkle! But do you see any sparkle?
Barbie (Malibu): Um...
Rafa: Exactly. [Gets a garbage container] That's why I'm trashing them.
Barbie (Malibu): But they're gorgeous...
Rafa: They may look good, but they don't do what they're supposed to. They're useless to me. You two should take them.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Seriously?
Barbie (Malibu): Really?!
Rafa: They're all yours. We'll just innovate a little.
[Rafa picks up two more dresses and puts them on Malibu and Brooklyn as headdresses. Gato watches and barks.]
Rafa: Now, that's a look. On you two, they totally work.
[Gato laughs.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Laughs] Speaking of work, come on. We gotta get to class.
Barbie (Malibu): She's right. We should go. So nice to meet you, Rafa.
Barbie (Brooklyn): And thank you for these. Adios, Gato.
Rafa: [Bows] It was an honor, and a pleasure.
[Rafa throws his remote control at a garbage can, but Gato jumps out his arms and brings it back to him. Gato barks.]
Rafa: Yeah, I know, Gato. Not even worth chewing on.
Scene 6 (Malibu's Struggles)[]
[The next day, Malibu wakes up to see Brooklyn ready to go out.]
Barbie (Malibu): No, it can't be 6 a.m. already.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Sorry, Malibu. You're still on West Coast time. Better rise and shine, or you'll be late again.
Barbie (Malibu): Just five more minutes?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Not if you plan on making it to class. See you there.
Barbie (Malibu): Okay, okay... [Falls out of bed.] It's 3 a.m. in California, you know!
[Malibu goes to ballet class. "Work It" plays and Malibu looks unconfident as she dances.]
Barbie (Malibu): Look and learn, feel the burn
And just try harder
This is tough, tighten up
And fail smarter
My spirit is deflating
I'm straining, my fear's inflating
This school's calling my bluff [Dean Morrison, the custodian and another woman watch, unimpressed.]
Hope I have the right stuff
[In fencing class, Malibu loses to Emmie.]
And remember how to be brave (ooh)
Tell my nerves to behave (ooh)
[Malibu dejectedly returns to her dorm room.]
Gotta get out of my head
Get out of my head, then hit restart
[In ballet class, Malibu gets the moves wrong.]
Malibu and students: Grind, grind, on my mind
Work it, work it, double time
Grind, grind, on my mind
Never fall a step behind
Grind, grind, on my mind
Work it, work it, double time
Grind, grind, on my mind
(Work it, work it)
[In guitar class, Malibu's guitar string breaks. Emmie is in the background, still in disguise.]
Barbie (Malibu): This is what you wanted
All you've ever wanted, don't be daunted
Just be patient and relax
Go on, cut yourself some slack
[Malibu runs through a hallway with her guitar and a stack of books and papers. She drops some papers, and runs back to pick them up.]
Easier said than done
Why am I the only one
Who keeps scrambling and face-planting?
This is draining, stop complaining
[Malibu sits in a room and studies.]
I know it's worth the trouble
Crowd: Ooh
Barbie (Malibu): To push myself and hustle
Crowd: Ooh
[Malibu leaves and dejectedly returns to her dorm room.]
Barbie (Malibu): Gotta get of my head, and hit restart
[In ballet class, Malibu gets the moves wrong.]
Malibu and students: Grind, grind, on my mind
Work it, work it, double time
Grind, grind, on my mind
Never fall a step behind
Grind, grind, on my mind
Work it, work it, double time
Grind, grind, on my mind
(Work it, work it)
[Malibu drops a spotlight.]
Barbie (Malibu): Did everyone see? Of course they saw
Pull yourself together
[In singing class, Malibu sings wrong.]
Practice 'til it's perfect
Gotta work it, work it, find your purpose
[Malibu falls on stage.]
Plant your feet, use your core
Keep the beat, get off the floor
[Malibu watches ballet class from outside the room, then joins late and gets the moves wrong.]
How can you even show your face?
Chill out but stand up straight and
Malibu and students: Grind, grind, on my mind
Work it, work it, double time
Grind, grind, on my mind
Never fall a step behind
(Work it, work it)
Barbie (Malibu): I'm not gonna whine
(Work it, work it)
Barbie (Malibu): Things'll be fine
(Work it, work it)
Barbie (Malibu): I'm losing my mind
(Grind)
[Malibu falls over.]
Scene 7 (Ken)[]
[In the dorm room, Malibu and Brooklyn are sleeping. Malibu's phone buzzes, waking up Brooklyn.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Yelps] Oh, man. Is it 6 a.m. already?
Barbie (Malibu): Sorry, no. [Sees Ken is calling.] It's my phone. A friend back home.
[Brooklyn goes back to sleep.]
Barbie (Malibu): [Whispers] Hello?
[Ken looks like he's surfing.]
Ken: Have you made it big on Broadway yet?
Barbie (Malibu): Ken, do you know what time it is here?
[Ken is balancing on a surfboard on top of a beach ball.]
Ken: Whoops! Guess I forgot about the time difference. [Loses balance and falls] Whoa, ooh! Ouch. [To Barbie] Sorry.
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] It's okay. Hold on... [Goes to balcony] Okay, better now.
Ken: [Sits on beach chair] So, how is it? Tell me everything!
Barbie (Malibu): Well, so far, it's somewhere between "completely amazing" and "total disaster.
Ken: Why? It can't be that bad.
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] No, no, it-it's a dream come true, really. I think it's my destiny, so I just hope I can keep the faith... but, wow. The competition is fierce.
Ken: But there's only one Barbie!
Barbie (Malibu): Funny you should say that. I made a new friend, and guess what her name is?
Ken: Faith? Hope? Destiny?
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] No, no, no. Are you sitting down? Barbie Roberts! Barbie... Roberts!
Ken: [Laughs] Wow! The odds must be, like, one in a billion.
Barbie (Malibu): Like everyone here, she's amazing.
Ken: Well, you're more talented than anyone I know.
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] We'll see about that.
Scene 8 (Emmie)[]
[Malibu and Brooklyn are in the cafeteria with food.]
Percussionist: [Holding drum] Coming through! Coming through!
Barbie (Malibu): I don't think I've ever been this tired.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Pace yourself. It's only the first week. [Looks for somewhere to sit] Hmm, over there. [They go up to Emmie, who is still in disguise.] Are these seats taken?
Emmie: [Looking at phone] All yours.
Barbie (Malibu): Thank you.
[Emmie looks up, smiling. Her smile drops when she sees Brooklyn. Emmie hides her face.]
Barbie (Malibu): Hi, I'm Barbie. I mean, Malibu. This is Brooklyn.
[Brooklyn smiles and waves. Emmie refuses to turn around.]
Emmie: Lee.
[Brooklyn stops smiling. Malibu and Brooklyn look at each other, then Brooklyn stares at Emmie.]
Barbie (Malibu): I hope I didn't embarrass myself too much in class. Thanks for fencing with a beginner.
Emmie: You were fine, really.
Barbie (Brooklyn): You look so familiar.
Emmie: Just got one of those faces, I guess.
Barbie (Brooklyn): No, there's definitely something...
[Rafa arrives with his food.]
Rafa: Hola! What's good, chicas?
Barbie (Malibu): Rafa! This is Lee.
Emmie: Hey...
Barbie (Brooklyn): Rafa's in costumes.
Rafa: Are you in the performance course too?
Emmie: Yeah. Acting.
Rafa: I thought so! You have that serious actor vibe.
Emmie: I do?
[Brooklyn looks for something on her phone.]
Barbie (Malibu): Mm-hm.
Emmie: [Smiles] Thanks. That... means a lot.
Rafa: You remind me of someone. Who is it?
Emmie: Yeah, I hear that a lot.
[Brooklyn stops searching on her phone and looks at Emmie. She notices that Emmie is wearing a wig, and sees a strand of her real, red hair underneath.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Wait, I know you.
[Emmie, Rafa and Malibu look at Brooklyn.]
Emmie: You must be confusing me with someone else.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I don't think I'm confused, Emily.
[Brooklyn reveals a childhood photo of her and Emmie.]
Emmie: [Groans] Hi, Barbie.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I knew I knew you! Emily! Oh, my gosh.
Barbie (Malibu):' Wait, what's going on here?
[Malibu sips her drink. Emmie takes her glasses off. Malibu recognises her and almost spits out her drink.]
Barbie (Malibu): Em--Emily? As in, Emmie... Lee? Emmie?! Lee?! Emmie?! As in... Emmie?!
Emmie: [Puts glasses on] Shh! Shh!
Rafa: I love your costume.
Emmie: Okay, okay, please, please, shh!
Barbie (Brooklyn): I can't believe it. Emily... After all this time... What's with the disguise?
Emmie: I don't wanna be recognized. If everyone here knows I'm Emmie--that Emmie-- they'll treat me differently.
Barbie (Malibu): Wow, the Emmie. I've been your biggest fan since your first single. I even lip-synched to it on my vlog! Wait until my friends hear about this!
Emmie: Like that.
Barbie (Malibu): Got it! Sorry. [Pretends to zip mouth shut.]
Emmie: Thanks. I appreciate it.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I can't believe it's you. Well, sort of you.
Rafa: What's a megastar like you doing in a place like this?
Emmie: Training. Real training. I wanna be taken seriously, which never happens when I'm Emmie. You have no idea what it's like.
Barbie (Malibu): I can imagine... / Barbie (Brooklyn): No, I don't.
[Malibu and Brooklyn look at each other.]
Emmie: The whole "instalebrity" thing is out of control.
Barbie (Malibu): Your secret is safe with us.
Emmie: Thanks.
[Emmie looks at Brooklyn. Brooklyn smiles and nods.]
Emmie: When my dad became my manager, I just stopped having a life. He even took me out of school.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Your dad? But you live with your mom.
Emmie: I did, but then everything changed when my dad took over.
Barbie (Brooklyn): You lost touch with everyone?
Emmie: Yep, my dad made sure it was all business, all the time.
Rafa: [Puts hand on Emmie's shoulder] Ouch. That's tough.
Emmie: I even had to beg him to cut my tour dates so I could come here this summer.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I'm glad you did.
Emmie: Yeah, me too. I've missed you.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Same.
[Emmie smiles at Brooklyn.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): But don't worry, I'm not going to ask you for a selfie or autograph.
Emmie: For you, I'd make an exception.
[Rafa, Emmie, Brooklyn and Malibu laugh.]
Scene 9 (Trying on Costumes)[]
[Malibu and Brooklyn are practicing ballet in Central Park.]
Barbie (Malibu): It's so great that you and Emmie found each other again.
Barbie (Brooklyn): All this time, I thought she ditched me...
Barbie (Malibu): But it was her father calling the shots.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I don't even remember him.
Barbie (Malibu): I don't know if I'd ever wanna be that famous. How 'bout you?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Nah, I just love to dance. Fame might be a side effect one day, but it's not the goal.
Barbie (Malibu): Like my singing, or even my vlog. I just have to express myself.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Me, too.
Barbie (Malibu): And all the world's a stage.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Then we need costumes.
[Malibu and Brooklyn put the costumes that Rafa gave them.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Not bad! Look at us!
Barbie (Malibu): [Laughs] Look at this place! You're so lucky to live in New York.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I've travelled a lot with my mom, but there's nowhere better.
Barbie (Malibu): Your mom travels a lot?
Barbie (Brooklyn): She's an airline pilot.
Barbie (Malibu): Well, I'm so glad I travelled here and met you.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Same. Cosmic chaos. [Phone rings] Speaking of parents...
[Brooklyn answers her phone. Steel drum music plays in the background.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Hi, Dad. All good. Yep. Absolutely. Mom's in Mexico? I thought she was heading to Australia? Oh, next week. Got it. [Malibu dances] No, Dad. I'm not gonna schlep back and forth every day. The dorm's are fine.
[Malibu does a funny dance, so Brooklyn and Malibu laugh.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yes, she's very nice. You'd like her. Okay. I know. I know. I love you more. Bye! [Puts away phone] My dad thinks it's his job to worry.
Barbie (Malibu): It is. My dad's the same. Come on, let's take a selfie for both of our dads. That will keep them happy. [Takes selfie with Brooklyn]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Oh, smart thinking.
[Malibu and Brooklyn take more selfies and hold hands. They spin around near a water fountain, making the sequins on their dresses sparkle.]
Barbie (Malibu): Whoa...
Barbie (Brooklyn): What the--?
Barbie (Malibu): Did you see that? There! Twirling makes them sparkle!
Barbie (Brooklyn): Rafa might be on to something!
[Malibu and Brooklyn laugh as they twirl and dance.]
Scene 10 (Mr. Miller)[]
[Malibu and Brooklyn are at a school assembly.]
Dean Morrison: Please, everyone! Quiet, please! Thank you. We have a surprise visitor this afternoon. A member of our board of directors is touring the campus and sitting in on classes. I'm sure it goes without saying that I expect you all to present yourselves and this program in the best possible light.
Rafa: No pressure.
[Malibu and Brooklyn laugh.]
Dean Morrison: Ah, here he is now! Welcome, Mr. Miller!
Emmie: Unbelievable...
Dean Morrison: Everyone, this is Mr. Miller. Mr Miller, these are some of the finest young performers you'll ever meet!
Barbie (Brooklyn): That's us.
[Malibu nods. Mr. Miller clears his throat.]
Mr. Miller: Hello, I'm, uh, pleased to be here. Lovely campus. Don't let me interrupt.
Dean Morrison: Mr. Miller, please don't hesitate to ask any of us if you have any questions as you tour the academy. Okay, people! [Claps] Thank you!
[The students leave the assembly. Emmie hides her face as she passes Mr. Miller, and leaves the building before him. As he leaves, she grabs him.]
Emmie: What are you doing here?
[Mr. Miller waves to people as he talks to Emmie.]
Mr. Miller: I'm just taking a tour, sweetheart.
Emmie: Come on, Dad. I know you better than that. Tell me why you're really here.
Mr. Miller: Let's just say I'm protecting my investment. I wanna make sure no one gets in the way of my talented daughter winning that Spotlight Solo.
Emmie: Look at me, Dad. I'm trying to avoid the spotlight. I enrolled in this school to learn, not win some contest.
Mr. Miller: Do you have any idea how much money cancelling your tour cost us? The least you could do is make sure you win that Spotlight Solo so we can turn it into a PR event.
Emmie: Well, I'm not helping you.
Mr. Miller: That's okay. I know how to make sure my little girl shines. Now take this silly costume off.
[Mr. Miller reaches out to Emmie, but she slaps his hand away.]
Emmie: Stop!
Mr. Miller: Do you think no one here knows who you really are?
Emmie: No one except my friends.
Mr. Miller: Sweetheart, you don't have "friends." You only have competitors.
Emmie: Not if I don't compete.
Mr. Miller: You'd better get back to class. [Emmie storms away.] Daddy's got business to take care of.
Scene 11 (Brooklyn Gets Injured)[]
[Mr. Miller observes Malibu, Brooklyn, Rafa and Emmie during class. Rafa films on his phone.]
Emmie: You guys mind if we move over there? Rafa's recording the class and I'd prefer not to be in the shot.
[Malibu, Brooklyn and Emmie wave at Rafa. He waves back, and the girls walk away.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): No problem.
Barbie (Malibu): [Puts hand on Emmie's shoulder] That's gotta be nerve-racking-- always worrying about cameras.
Emmie: Yeah, it stresses me out. [Mr. Miller smiles and waves] Lots of things are stressing me out today.
[Emmie ignores Mr. Miller, and he stops smiling.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): It's alright. Come on, let's warm up.
[Malibu, Brooklyn and Emmie stretch and get warmed up.]
Barbie (Malibu): [To Brooklyn] Point those toes! Loosen up!
Emmie: [Laughs] Move it, move it, move it!
[Malibu, Brooklyn and Emmie dance and laugh.]
Barbie (Malibu): Woo, woo, woo-ooh-ooh!
Barbie (Brooklyn): Go, Malibu! Go, Malibu!
[In the orchestra pit, the percussionist is walking with his drum.]
Percussionist: Excuse me! Pardon!
[Malibu spins and accidentally kicks Emmie. Malibu loses her balance, and Emmie bumps into Brooklyn. Malibu and Brooklyn stumble around. Brooklyn falls down onto the percussionist's drum. Her leg gets caught in the drum.]
Percussionist: Coming-- ugh! [Brooklyn falls on the floor of the orchestra pit.] Through...
Scene 12 (Good Vibes)[]
[Malibu is sitting in the cafeteria with Emmie.]
Student: I heard she broke her ankle.
Student: I heard she broke her whole foot.
Student: Well, she definitely broke the whole drum.
[The students laugh.]
Barbie (Malibu): Poor Brooklyn. I hope she's okay. I feel terrible.
Emmie: It's not your fault.
Barbie (Malibu): But what if she can't dance? What about her shot at the Spotlight Solo? What if--
Emmie: It was an accident. [Puts hand on Malibu's shoulder] She's going to be fine... I hope.
[Malibu and Emmie see Brooklyn on crutches. Malibu goes up to Brooklyn and walks next to her.]
Barbie (Malibu): Oh, Brooklyn, you're walking!
Barbie (Brooklyn): It's not broken. Only a sprain.
Barbie (Malibu): Thank goodness. I was so worried.
Barbie (Brooklyn): So was I, but everything's okay. It should be fine in a day or two.
Barbie (Malibu): What can I do to... help?
[Malibu falls into the school entrance's revolving door and pulls Brooklyn in with her. They spin around, but Malibu catches Brooklyn.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Stop helping?
[Malibu and Brooklyn laugh. Brooklyn leaves the building. Malibu falls out of the revolving doors, and they laugh as Brooklyn helps her up.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Seriously, what is it with you and doors?
[Malibu and Brooklyn sit on a park bench.]
Barbie (Malibu): [Sighs] Fresh air and sunshine can cure almost anything!
[Gato barks and runs up to them. Rafa runs after him.]
Barbie (Malibu): Gato! Hey, little fella.
[Gato jumps into Malibu's arms.]
Rafa: Hey! What's the verdict?
Barbie (Brooklyn): I'll be fine. Just a little stumble on the path to greatness.
Rafa: I hear you. I thought my instructors would be wowed by my costumes, not calling them "admirable attempts."
Barbie (Brooklyn): Oh, come on. You're just having technical difficulties.
Barbie (Malibu): [Twirls] And they work... sometimes.
Rafa: I know, but I can't control them! Even if I could, it's too late, anyway. I had to submit my project. Epic fail.
[Gato whines.]
Barbie (Malibu): Well, you know what they say - if at first you don't succeed, your friends are here to help you try again.
Rafa: Is that what they say?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Rafa, you gotta admit she's onto something. Look at me! I haven't given up.
Barbie (Malibu): Positive attitude changes everything.
["Good Vibes" starts playing and Malibu hands Gato to Brooklyn. Malibu sings.]
Barbie (Malibu): I flew in on cloud 9 with Malibu sunshine
To the playground of my dreams
Made a new best friend, there wasn't a question
That everything would work out perfectly
Then boom, boom, spoke too soon
Worst in the room
Like a total crash landing
But I'm not gonna let that keep me down
It's all about those
Both Barbies: Good vibes
Barbie (Malibu): Every future looks bright
When you got those
Both Barbies: Good, good, good vibes
Barbie (Malibu): Gotta catch those
Both Barbies: Good, good, good vibes
Barbie (Brooklyn): Now take a look at me, so on point and savvy
The whole world at my feet
Inspired, irreverent, didn't know what fear meant
I dance and leap to my own beat
Then boom, boom, spoke too soon
Guess I'm not immune
To the flaws of gravity
But crutches won't be keeping me earthbound
It's all about those
Both Barbies: Good vibes
Barbie (Brooklyn): Every future looks bright
When you got those
Both Barbies: Good, good, good vibes
Barbie (Brooklyn): Gotta catch those
Both Barbies: Good, good, good vibes
Barbie (Brooklyn): Is the glass half full or half empty?
It depends on when you ask me
Barbie (Malibu): I think it runneth over
Let positivity take over
Rafa: With thunder and lightning dresses, I'm no Thomas Edison
But a good attitude's good medicine
Though I'm reticent to put on a happy face
Cómo se dice? Let me put it this way
Se quien este chicas, mi ? loca
My imagination soars
Flying to dizzy heights, styling with dazzling lights
?
Then boom, boom, spoke too soon
Now I'm cocooned
In my own disappointment
Gotta spread my wings and get to higher ground
It's all about those
Malibu, Brooklyn and Rafa: Good vibes
Rafa: Every future
Malibu, Brooklyn and Rafa: Looks bright
Rafa: When you got those
Malibu, Brooklyn and Rafa: Good, good, good vibes
Rafa: Gotta catch those
Malibu, Brooklyn and Rafa: Good, good, good vibes
Both Barbies: It's all about those
Malibu, Brooklyn and Rafa:Good vibes
Every future looks bright
When you got those good, good, good vibes
Gotta catch those good, good, good
Good, good, good vibes
[They finish singing and dancing. Gato hops on Brooklyn's lap and barks. Malibu, Brooklyn and Rafa laugh.]
Scene 13 (Sabotage)[]
[Malibu goes to ballet class and does well. She also does well while fencing with Emmie, and while playing guitar in music class. The teacher gives her a thumbs up. In ballet class, Brooklyn and Emmie watch Malibu. Emmie gives Malibu a double thumbs up, and Malibu and Brooklyn fist bump each other. The trio walk down a hallway.]
Dean Morrison: Miss Roberts?
Both Barbies: Yes?
Dean Morrison: A word in my office, please.
[Malibu goes into Dean Morrison's office.]
Dean Morrison: Miss Roberts, you are a very promising performer.
Barbie (Malibu): Thank you.
Dean Morrison: But talent isn't the only thing we value here. Professional conduct is just as important.
Barbie (Malibu): Of course. I know I had a bumpy start in some of my classes, but--
Dean Morrison: Miss Roberts, I'm referring to your attempt to sabotage one of your competitors for the Spotlight Solo.
Barbie (Malibu): "Sabotage?"
Dean Morrison: I've been informed that the accident involving the other Barbie Roberts was no accident.
Barbie (Malibu): Of course it was. She's my friend. Why in the world would I sabotage her?
Dean Morrison: Pushing a competitor into the orchestra pit is a serious charge.
Barbie (Malibu): "Pushing?!" No, no, that's not how it happened!
Dean Morrison: A concerned witness came to me directly... very upset. He saw everything.
Barbie (Malibu): But, Dean Morrison, I would never do anything like that.
Dean Morrison: My hands are tied. I've been told to take appropriate action, or funding for the program will be cut completely.
Barbie (Malibu): What is "appropriate action"?
Dean Morrison: I must expel you from the program, effective immediately.
Barbie (Malibu): You mean, I'm being sent home? To Malibu?
Dean Morrison: I'm afraid so. I'm sorry, Miss Roberts.
Barbie (Malibu): But... it was an accident.
[It switches to Dean Morrison speaking to Brooklyn.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): But... it was an accident.
Dean Morrison: Apparently not. Unfortunately, some people think competition is only about winning.
Barbie (Brooklyn): But... that's not Malibu. I mean, Barbie. You don't know her like I do.
Dean Morrison: Maybe I don't... but perhaps you don't know her as well as you think you do.
Barbie (Brooklyn): What am I supposed to do now?
Dean Morrison: The other Miss Roberts is leaving... but you're still here. Make the most of it.
[Brooklyn leaves on her crutches.]
Scene 14 (Playground of Our Dreams)[]
[Brooklyn is in a room alone, playing a guitar. Malibu walks in.]
Barbie (Malibu): Hey...
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Without looking up] Hey.
Barbie (Malibu): I-- um... I... [sighs]
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Annoyed] Do you need something?
Barbie (Malibu): So... I... [Sighs] I met with Dean Morrison.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yeah? Me too.
Barbie (Malibu): Can you believe they're sending me home? Are you okay?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Barbie, you can drop the "concerned friend" act.
Barbie (Malibu): What? Brooklyn, don't tell me you believe any of this...
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Looks at Malibu] Don't call me "Brooklyn". It's Barbie. "Brooklyn" was for when we were friends.
Barbie (Malibu): [Gasps] But we are friends.
Barbie (Brooklyn): We're competitors. We both want the Spotlight Solo, I get it. You're out for you. It's that simple.
Barbie (Malibu): No, it's not that simple. It was an accident. I wasn't competing against you.
Barbie (Brooklyn): No? It sure seemed like it.
Barbie (Malibu): We were pushing each other to be our best.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yeah? About "pushing"... there was a witness, Barbie. A witness. Someone saw you push me on purpose!
Barbie (Malibu): That's not how it happened!
Barbie (Brooklyn): You know, for a while, I really thought you were special. That this was special. I guess I was wrong.
Barbie (Malibu): That's not fair.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Tch... that's ironic. You telling me what's fair.
[Brooklyn plays her guitar. Malibu looks like she wants to say something else, and reaches out to Brooklyn, but she walks away. She looks back at Brooklyn, and Brooklyn sighs. Malibu leaves. Brooklyn sings.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Back here again, losing a friend
I thought I was strong, but I'm reeling
This time felt different, our connection was instant
But that was pure magical thinking
[Brooklyn is shown sitting alone on the subway with her crutches.]
Just move on from the pain
Soon it'll fade like a memory
You'll start over again
Evolving from this fateful origin story
[Brooklyn plays the piano.]
A chariot streaks across the sky
So majestically
[Brooklyn walks by a merry-go-round on her crutches. She looks at the carousel.]
Two girls on an odyssey
In the city that never sleeps
[Brooklyn sees herself on the merry-go-round with Malibu.]
Riding high on a merry-go-round
Of modern mythology
Glory within reach
In the playground of our dreams, oh-whoa
[Brooklyn walks away from the carousel. She is shown playing piano, then back at the dorm. Malibu's things are gone.]
Our destiny with reality
In the race against the wind
Discovering a new part of me
In a fated friend
[Brooklyn sees the journal that Malibu gave her. She hugs it to her chest.]
I knew finding you would be
An epic journey with no end
Or so that it seemed
[Brooklyn goes to the balcony.]
In the playground of our dreams, oh-whoa
[In the sky, there are marquee lights with photos of Brooklyn and Malibu.]
Brooklyn and Barbie (Malibu): But you can't see shooting stars
In the city of murky lights
[Brooklyn sees herself dancing with Malibu in the ballet room.]
Fate brought us together
Then tore us apart, tore us apart
Wish I could go back and restart
[Malibu is shown singing by a water fountain.]
I'll race across the sky
To a world where dreams and friendships
Aren't destined to collide
[Malibu has her belongings and is getting a cab.]
Barbie (Malibu): The chariot has landed
Stranded on this lonely island
Where great beginnings
Don't get happy endings
Glorious mythologies
Can slip out of your reach
In reality, best friends leave
The ride was just make believe
[Malibu is in the cab.]
In the playground of our dreams, oh
[They finish singing. Later, Brooklyn is in ballet class alone. Emmie walks into the room.]
Emmie: Hey. I heard about Malibu.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yeah?
Emmie: I know how much it must hurt.
Barbie (Brooklyn): "Hurt?" This ankle hurts, but it'll get better. Barbie and me? I think we're done.
Emmie: You two were so close. Kinda reminded me of us, you know?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yeah... I thought we were done, too, after you skyrocketed to fame.
Emmie: You were always a better dancer than me. It could've been the other way around, you know.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Maybe. I'm just glad to know that you didn't forget about me.
Emmie: That was never true. Things aren't always what they seem to be, Barbie.
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Sighs] Okay... I've gotta practice. Hey... thanks, Em.
Scene 15 (Rafa and Emmie)[]
[In the costume room, Emmie is sitting on a box and bouncing a ball near Gato. Rafa is looking at one of his creations.]
Rafa: If you ask me, it doesn't add up.
Emmie: It doesn't add up at all. Those two wanted the other to win almost more than they wanted it for themselves.
Rafa: Gato and I can always sniff out the good ones, and Malibu? Is a good one.
[Gato barks.]
Emmie: Competition can do weird things to people.
Rafa: But not to Malibu. Did you know that she made me promise not to post the video I recorded of you that day, just to protect your privacy?
Emmie: Hold up! What did you just say?
Rafa: You heard me! When Brooklyn went into the pit, I had my phone and I was recording.
Emmie: You were recording!
Rafa: I was recording!
[Gato barks. Emmie rushes over to Rafa and they look at the video.]
Emmie: It was an accident!
Rafa: No doubt about it!
Emmie: Rafa, do you know what this means? Malibu didn't do anything wrong! Wait, go back. Can you zoom in?
[Rafa zooms in on Mr. Miller. Emmie realizes her father was the witness.]
Emmie: No way...
Rafa: What?
Emmie: I need you to send me that video, okay?
Rafa: Done.
Emmie: Okay, you find Brooklyn and show her this. I've got someone else to show it to.
Rafa: On it!
[Rafa and Emmie high five as Gato barks. Emmie runs off and Gato jumps into Rafa's arms.]
Scene 16 (Brooklyn and Emmie)[]
[Brooklyn is talking to Dean Morrison in her office.]
Dean Morrison: I know this is difficult for you.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Thanks, but that's not why I'm here.
Dean Morrison: Oh?
Barbie (Brooklyn): You said that someone saw Malibu--I mean, Barbie, push me?
Dean Morrison: Yes, that's correct.
Barbie (Brooklyn): I know it was Mr. Miller. The board member.
Dean Morrison: It's not important who the witness was. What's important is th--
Barbie (Brooklyn): What if he wasn't telling the truth?
Dean Morrison: Miss Roberts, that's a very serious accusation, and impossible to prove.
Barbie (Brooklyn): What if I have proof?
[Brooklyn shows Dean Morrison the part of the video where Malibu stumbled and pushed Brooklyn by accident.]
Dean Morrison: It was an accident... Oh, dear! We've made a terrible mistake!
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yes, but we're in time to fix it.
[Outside, Mr. miller arrives to the academy in his car. Emmie marches up to him and folds her arms.]
Mr. Miller: What was so urgent that you needed to see me right away? [Looks at phone.]
Emmie: You should know, after what you did.
Mr. Miller: [Not looking up] I don't know what you're talking about, and you can't prove it, anyway.
Emmie: Prove what?
Mr. Miller: [Pauses] It doesn't matter. The Spotlight Solo is yours, sweetheart.
Emmie: I don't want it! And even if I did, I wouldn't cheat to get it!
Mr. Miller: Hey! I went to a lot of trouble to make sure you didn't have any competition.
Emmie: That's the worst part! You didn't even believe I could win it on my own!
Mr. Miller: Of course I do... but I have to think of your career. It's just business.
Emmie: It's not just "business", Dad! It's my life. Mine! [Puts hand on car window.]
Mr. Miller: [Puts hand on Emmie's] You know I only want what's best for you.
Emmie: Me too, Dad.
[Mr. Miller angrily bangs his fists on the steering wheel.]
Scene 17 (Apologizing)[]
[Malibu is back in California. At the Dreamhouse, she unpacks her things in her bedroom. Her parents check on her.]
George: Okay if we come in, Barbie?
Barbie (Malibu): [Sad] Sure.
[George and Margaret look at each other, then enter.]
Margaret: You okay, hon?
Barbie (Malibu): I just can't believe it ended this way.
[George puts his hand on Margaret's shoulder. She holds his hand.]
George: We're just glad you're back home, sweetheart.
Barbie (Malibu): Ugh...
Margaret: Everyone who knows you would realize this is just a big misunderstanding.
Barbie (Malibu): [Devastated] I thought Brooklyn really knew me. Getting kicked out is unfair, but Brooklyn thinking I pushed her? That's worse.
Margaret: [Puts hand on Malibu's shoulder] Aww, honey. [Strokes Malibu's hair.]
George: We're here, if you wanna talk.
[George and Margaret leave. Malibu puts away her guitar and then sinks to the ground. The doorbell rings.]
Barbie (Malibu): Ugh...
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Singing] How did we ever survive
Before us?
[Malibu stands up.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Singing] Together we're best of our possible worlds
[Malibu runs out of her room.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): For the first time, I've found my perfect match, yeah
[Malibu sees Brooklyn at the front door.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Singing] How did we ever survive
Before us?
[Speaking] Surprise?
Barbie (Malibu): Brooklyn-- Barbie. How-- what...? [Runs down stairs and sees Brooklyn without a cast.] Your foot!
Barbie (Brooklyn): [Moves ankle around] Ta-da! [Spins around.]
[Malibu and Brooklyn hug. Margaret gestures to George that they should give the girls some privacy. Margaret and George leave.]
Barbie (Malibu): What are you doing here?
Barbie (Brooklyn): I'm here to apologize... for not believing you. I never should've doubted you.
Barbie (Malibu): I can't believe you came all the way to California to apologize.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Remember, my mom flies all around the world?
[Brooklyn gestures to her mom, who is in a van outside. She waves to her mom, and her mom waves back and honks the horn.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): It's one of the perks of having a mom who's a pilot.
[Brooklyn's mom waves back and salutes Malibu with a wink. Malibu waves back.]
Barbie (Brooklyn): And I didn't just come here to apologize. I came here to bring you back.
[Brooklyn holds Malibu's hands, but Malibu backs away.]
Barbie (Malibu): Brooklyn... I can't go back. I ruined my chance... and yours.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Maybe... but maybe competition isn't always about winning.
Barbie (Malibu): Yeah... and maybe it can be about bringing the best in each other, but it's a little late now. I've been expelled.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Yeah, about that... you're re-enrolled.
Barbie (Malibu): What? How?
Barbie (Brooklyn): Let's save that story for the flight.
[Brooklyn puts her arm around Malibu.]
Scene 19 (Finale)[]
Barbie (Brooklyn): And so, thanks to Rafa and Emmie, the whole thing got cleared up.
Barbie (Malibu): I'm so glad... and really happy to be back at Handler... but mostly? I'm so glad you and I are okay. I'm really sorry about all of this.
Barbie (Brooklyn): Hey, enough with the apologies! We're more than okay. We're us. And we're gonna make it to the finish line together.
Barbie (Malibu): Together.
[Malibu and Brooklyn fist bump.]
[At Handler Academy, Dean Morrison makes an announcement.]
Dean Morrison: Attention, students. The selection for the Spotlight Solo has been posted on the message board.
[Students chatter. Rafa and the percussionist look at the message board. Malibu and Brooklyn see "Barbie Roberts" has the Spotlight Solo.]
Barbie (Malibu): Huh? [Hugs Brooklyn] Congratulations.
Barbie (Brooklyn): You, too.
Percussionist: [To Rafa] Barbie Roberts got the Spotlight Solo? Which one?
Rafa: [Puts arm around percussionist] Wait and see, my drummer dude. Wait and see.
[While students play instruments, the percussionist is sadly playing a triangle because Brooklyn broke his drum. He sighs, then hears a drum being hit.]
Percussionist: Huh?
Barbie (Malibu): Coming through!
[Malibu and Brooklyn present the percussionist with his fixed drum that has a bow on it. He squeals, then runs over to the drum.]
Percussionist: Oh! [Kisses drum] How I've missed you... [Kisses drum]
Barbie (Brooklyn): Don't you just love a good reunion?
Barbie (Malibu): I sure do. [Fist bumps Brooklyn.]
[In the assembly room, an orchestra plays music. Students cheer as Dean Morrison arrives in a glitzy suit.]
Dean Morrison: Good evening, everyone, and welcome to the Handler Arts Academy's biggest night of the year - our Spotlight Solo! Tonight, to announce the winner of the Handler Arts Academy's Spotlight Solo Competition, we have a very special guest!
[Emmie appears on screen. Students gasp. Emmie takes off her wig to reveal her red hair.]
Emmie: What's good, New York?!
[Students cheer as Emmie livestreams from Time Square.]
Emmie: New York! Emmie here, coming at you live from Times Square to announce the winner of the Spotlight Solo! Put your hands together for my friends, Barbie Roberts and Barbie Roberts! Otherwise known as Malibu and Brooklyn, the winners of the Spotlight Solo!
[Malibu and Brooklyn perform and sing "See You at the Finish Line".]
Barbie (Brooklyn): You're my fiercest competition
And my best friend's no contradiction
Barbie (Malibu): It's our mission to conquer doubt
Ambition amped up, let's shout it out
Barbie (Brooklyn): Never let jealousy get in my way
Help each other up, ?
Gotta muscle our hustle, seize every day
Both Barbies: Going in for the win, taking over Broadway
Barbie (Malibu): You set the bar, I'll raise it
Barbie (Brooklyn): You pick the trail, I'll blaze it
Both Barbies: Won't catch me holding back
Not holding back, no
Barbie (Brooklyn): Why should our drive divide us?
Barbie (Malibu): Let's let our strength unite us
Won't catch me holding back
But I still got your back
Oh, see you at the finish line
When you need the strength to clear it
I'm gonna be there cheering
Oh, see you at the finish line
Never leaving you behind
See you at the finish line
Barbie (Malibu): The path from grit to glory
Tells every winner's epic story
Barbie (Brooklyn): To all the brave girls through all of time
Both Barbies: We stand on your shoulders, on the climb
Why should our drive divide us?
Let's let our strength unite us
Won't catch me holding back
But I still got your back, woo
[Rafa uses his remote control to light up their dresses. He has also dressed Gato in a hat and bowtie. Rafa picks up Gato. George, Margaret, Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea are watching in-person, and so are Brooklyn's parents, Dean Morrison and the custodian.]
Both Barbies: Wise up, rise up
Help each other climb up
Never let our grind up, yeah, yeah
Wise up, rise up
Help each other climb up
Never let our grind up...
[Renee, Daisy, Nikki and Teresa are watching in-person.]
Oh, see you at the finish line
When you need the strength to clear it
I'm gonna be there cheering
Oh, see you at the finish line
Wise up, rise up
Help each other climb up (oh, yeah)
Never let our grind up, yeah, yeah
Wise up, rise up (whoa, whoa)
Help each other climb up
See you at the finish line
Oh, see you at the finish line (yeah)
[Malibu and Brooklyn hold hands and turn to the camera. "The End" shows and then "Big City Big Dreams" plays during the end credits.]
