Changes: Barbie/Dolphin Magic

Barbie Roberts is a character in Barbie Dolphin Magic. She is voiced by Erica Lindbeck. Barbie and her sisters go to an island to visit Ken during his marine biology internship. They befriend a mermaid named Isla and help her to free the Gemstone Dolphins from the research facility where Ken works.

Story

Barbie and her sisters go to an island to visit Ken during his marine biology internship. They bring their puppies with them. The girls arrive at the island's resort and go to their cabin. Stacie has a sprained ankle, so Barbie has given her binoculars to look around the island with.

Ken greets the girls at their cabin, and Chelsea asks him if he's seen any mermaids yet. Skipper says mermaids aren't real, but Barbie says not seeing mermaids doesn't mean they don't exist. Barbie, Skipper, Ken and the puppies use a speedboat to go to the reef, and then they go free diving.

Skipper takes photos of Barbie and Ken interacting with different sea creatures. She catches a glimpse of a mermaid named Isla, who is following a fishing boat that caught her Gemstone Dolphin friend, Emerald. Barbie sees Isla too, but not clearly. Skipper takes a blurry photo of Isla, and then returns to the surface with Barbie and Ken. They get back on the speedboat and follow Isla to the research facility where Ken works.

At the cabin, Stacie and Chelsea use the binoculars and see Emerald at the research facility. They go to the facility and arrive there at the same time as Barbie, Skipper and Ken. Isla hides when she hears the speedboat approaching. Ken says Emerald is in the pool for sick animals, but Barbie thinks he looks fine, so he must be trapped. She tries to free Emerald, but Ken's boss, Marlo, stops her.

Ken asks if Emerald is a Gemstone Dolphin, but Marlo says they're not real. Ken says that means they're like mermaids, so Chelsea insists that mermaids are real. Barbie tells her that anything is possible, and Chelsea smiles. Marlo says a vet will be flying in to check on the dolphin the following day, and she tells everyone to leave.

On the way back to the cabin, Chelsea realizes the puppies are missing. Barbie goes back to the facility to get them. Skipper warns Barbie not to let Marlo catch her. When no one is around, Isla uses a magic necklace to turn her tail into legs, and tries to free Emerald. Barbie stops Isla from opening the gate to let Emerald out of the facility. Isla says Emerald is green because he is a Gemstone Dolphin, not because he is sick. Barbie tells Isla that a vet is coming the next day, so Isla agrees to wait as long as Barbie doesn't tell people about the Gemstone Dolphins. Barbie invites Isla back to the cabin.

Barbie introduces Isla to her sisters. Barbie sees Skipper looking at her photos from earlier, and Skipper says she can't stop looking at her blurry photo of Isla. Isla says the photo of her could just be a weird sea creature. Barbie says it may be a Gemstone Dolphin. Skipper is surprised, and Isla reminds Barbie that she agreed not to talk about the dolphins. Barbie apologizes and says she tells Skipper, Stacie, and Chelsea everything.

The girls go to eat at the resort's sandwich bar. They return there in the evening. When Ken arrives, Skipper takes a group selfie with her Barbie, Stacie Chelsea, Ken, and Isla. Chelsea makes a beat with a coconut shell, and Barbie, Skipper and Stacie join in to make a song. Barbie invites Isla to have a sleepover at the cabin, and gives Isla some spare pajamas and a toothbrush.

In the morning, Barbie and Isla go swimming and the Gemstone Dolphins join them. One of the dolphins touches Isla's necklace, changing her legs back into a tail. Barbie agrees not to tell her sisters, and Isla teaches Barbie how to swim like a mermaid. At the cabin, Stacie notices Marlo waving in a helicopter. She assumes that the pilot, Hugo, is the vet. Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea and the puppies go to find Barbie so they can tell her the vet has arrived.

Barbie and Isla hear Emerald clicking in the distance and wonder how they can hear him even though they're not near the facility. The dolphins swim towards the clicking, so Barbie and Isla follow them. Isla sees that there is an underwater cave and wonders if it leads to the facility. Barbie waits at the surface while Isla explores it with one of the dolphins. Meanwhile, while Barbie's sisters are trying to find her, they see the helicopter up close. Skipper thinks the walrus logo on it is weird for a vet.

Barbie's sisters hide when they hear Marlo and Hugo approaching. They eavesdrop as Marlo and Hugo discuss how they make money off of Emerald. The girls realize Hugo is not really a vet, so Skipper takes a photo of his logo. Skipper takes a photo of Hugo's logo. Meanwhile, Isla returns to Barbie and says the cave contains a dark maze of tunnels. Barbie and Isla realize the dolphins are missing, and Isla assumes they have gone to the facility to find Emerald. Barbie and Isla follow them there.

When the Gemstone Dolphins get to the facility, Marlo gives Ken a code to open the gate. She orders Ken to close the gate after the dolphins swim in. Marlo locks the gate using a remote. On their way to find Barbie, her sisters overhear Marlo telling Hugo that she needs more nets. Skipper looks at her tablet after putting a filter on her photo of Isla, and the photo is now clear enough to see that Isla is a mermaid. However, her face is not visible.

Barbie and Isla arrive at the facility, and Isla becomes distressed after seeing the trapped dolphins. Barbie asks Ken to help them unlock the gate and promises to explain later. Ken puts in the code, but Marlo has already changed it. Isla is upset that she trusted Barbie, so Barbie apologizes. Isla runs away just before Barbie's sisters arrive. They tell Barbie that Marlo is suspicious, and Skipper says she used the internet to find Hugo's logo. She reveals that Hugo is a criminal who owns a sideshow company. Chelsea tells Barbie that Skipper's blurry photo is of a mermaid, and Barbie gasps after realizing it was Isla.

Barbie comes up with a plan to help Isla free the Gemstone Dolphins, but she will need the help of her sisters, puppies, Ken, and Isla. She apologizes to Isla again, and they hug after Isla agrees to help. While Ken, Chelsea, and the puppies distract Marlo at the sandwich bar, Barbie's sisters steal Marlo's remote. Skipper hacks the remote by syncing it to her tablet. To further distract Marlo, Barbie gives Isla a cue to splash her tail in the water next to the sandwich bar. After they get the code and return the remote, Marlo realizes she has been hacked because she notices the remote is dirty. She changes the code again.

Barbie goes back to the facility with everyone. Stacie asks how Isla was able to look like a mermaid during the plan, and Barbie says they just used special effects. However, Isla acknowledges that it is hard to keep a secret from your sisters, so she gets in the pool with the dolphins and reveals her tail to everyone. Skipper realizes Isla is the mermaid from her photo. Skipper tries to use the code to free the Gemstone Dolphins, but it fails. Marlo arrives and says she is going to use the helicopter to transport the dolphins.

Isla hides underwater with the dolphins, so Barbie tells Marlo that they escaped and are probably miles away already. Marlo leaves and gets in the helicopter with Hugo, hoping to spot the dolphins from the air. Isla and the dolphins resurface, and Isla reveals that they were hiding in a tunnel. They tried to escape, but the tunnels were too dark and confusing to navigate. Isla thinks it may be connected to the cave they found earlier.

After Barbie mentions using a signal from the cave entrance they found, Isla takes a shell off her necklace. She gives it to Barbie and says that if they both hold a shell from the necklace, it will create a current of light and color that can be followed underwater. It is how merpeople and friends of mermaids find each other in the vast ocean. Isla says the light will lead her to Barbie, so Barbie and Stacie go to the cave entrance.

At the cave, Stacie keeps an eye out for the helicopter while Barbie uses the shell. Barbie goes underwater and touches the shell. The water lights up, and Isla and the dolphins begin escaping. Marlo sees them from the helicopter. Ken notices Marlo and gets in the speedboat with everyone else. Stacie tells Barbie to hide from the helicopter, so Barbie covers the shell. The magic light goes away, but Isla and the dolphins made it out in time. Isla hugs Barbie and thanks her. Ken arrives in the speedboat, and Barbie and Isla get on. The dolphins swim alongside the boat.

Skipper notices that the water is getting shallow. Isla says she has to get out and swim with the dolphins. Barbie says goodbye to Isla and says she will miss her. Barbie tries to give back the shell from Isla's necklace, but Isla tells her to keep it. Isla turns back into a mermaid, and Barbie tells her to swim fast. Marlo sees Isla and wants to capture her instead of the dolphins. After noticing that Isla is in trouble, Barbie quickly disguises herself as Isla to distract Marlo by putting on diving flippers and covering herself in seaweed.

After seeing Barbie's silhouette in the ocean and mistaking her for Isla, Marlo shoots a net from the helicopter and captures Barbie. Hugo lands the helicopter, and he and Marlo get out. After seeing Barbie instead of Isla, Hugo feels like he wasted his time, and he leaves. Barbie tells Isla that she will lose her research facility because she exploits animals instead of helping them. Isla and the dolphins get away safely. Barbie keeps using the shell to try and reunite with Isla.

Later, at the beach, Skipper tells Barbie that she won a photo competition after submitting photos from their trip. She says she submitted all the photos from their trip, except for the photo of Isla as a mermaid. Barbie agrees that the best photo is the group selfie from the sandwich bar. She wonders how Isla is doing, so Skipper suggests using the shell again. Barbie holds the shell underwater, but she doesn't see Isla. Barbie sighs and says she misses Isla. Isla replies that she followed the current, and she hugs Barbie. Isla says she wouldn't have found Barbie if she hadn't kept using the shell, and she got closer to finding Barbie each time she used it. Barbie says she would never give up on Isla, and they put their arms around each other as they watch the Gemstone Dolphins swim nearby.

Physical Appearance

Barbie is a teenage girl with light skin, blue eyes, and long blonde hair. She has part of her hair in a braid, and she wears a necklace that says her name. When Barbie is outdoors at the resort, she wears two outfits.

One of her outfits is a black top with a white skirt and shoes. Her top has pink, purple, and orange tropical flowers with green leaves. When Barbie is in water, she wears a pink, blue, and yellow wetsuit jacket with colorful printed shorts. She sometimes wears this with pink and yellow flippers or pink flip-flops. She wears a yellow snorkeling mask while free diving.

At the sleepover, she wears light pink flamingo-print pajamas with yellow detailing. On the speedboat, she wears a yellow and purple lifejacket. To disguise herself as a mermaid, she wears her flippers and puts pink seaweed over her hair and around her legs.

Personality

Barbie is kind and helpful. She is able to make friends quickly, and she is good at cheering people up. She loves spending time with her sisters and friends, eating sandwiches, and having sleepovers. Barbie has a strong bond with her younger sisters, and she tells them everything. She encourages Chelsea to be imaginative and believe in mermaids, and she helps Stacie with her sprained ankle by getting her binoculars. Barbie is a strong swimmer and is good at planning, even on short notice. Barbie helps Isla to trust humans by helping her to save the Gemstone Dolphins. Barbie and Isla become friends, and Barbie calls Isla her "sister of the sea." She thinks Isla is quirky and amusing, and she is amazed by the Gemstone Dolphins and Isla being a mermaid. Barbie thinks of Ken as family because he grew up next to her. She likes playing the shell game with him.
